I really dug that one caller who said that "everybody whines." Because according to my observations, whining is an unavoidable part of human existence. People who claim to oppose whining often whine themselves as a result of such opposition. But with this being a world without consensus, I'm sure there are those who disagree. But that still doesn't mean they're not whiners.

Re: A nation of whiny Americans
Sat, July 12, 2008 - 8:06 PMI was unfortunate enough to catch bits and pieces of that broadcast. This sort of lunch-hour, "cafeteria" topic is exactly what is contributing to the dumbing-down of our citizenry. Not only do I think it is inappropriate for the sort of programming that the Washington Journal purports to maintain, but it is simply a silly topic, which used up 30-minutes of precious broadcast time. I am appalled at and concerned about the frightening condition of our collective consciousness and intellect in the United States.

Re: A nation of whiny Americans
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 8:15 AMso what's your point?
if someone whines, that probably means they have a need or desire for something.. if we are to progress in America, we have to figure out what our needs and desires are.. and if we can pick that up through the whines we hear in ourselves and others.. good for us, don't you agree?
I suspect the sentiment behind such statement might be that America is declining to second world status and we are not suppose to notice, or if we do, not to raise our voice, and if we do, to not do so in a way that seems weaks, because we American's are not suppose to be weak.
Or the sentiment is that everyone knows the empire is falling and every man for himself or every woman for herself, each one pull themselves up by their bootstraps and suck it up.
Seems, to me, like a macho cowboy mentality that, i thought, predominantly came from Texas. -

Re: A nation of whiny Americans
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 1:28 PMYou could also say that America was founded by whiners. After all, those founders did whine a lot about "taxtation without representation."

Re: A nation of whiny Americans
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 7:00 PMI'm not sure if your query was directed to me. At any rate, what I am suggesting is that such a topic, and particularly, the way that the Washington Journal posed the question is ridiculous. I'm not opposed to the topic being raised; however, it was inappropriate for what I thought was the sort of calibre of discussions that are aired on Washington Journal. That's my point. Such "topics" should be relegated to the satirical, pseudo-political programming on Comedy Central, not C-SPAN.
